About Dexters
Dexters are the smallest breed of cattle in the British Isles.   They originated in Ireland and are descended from the origional celtic black cattle.  As an old breed they have retained their natural instincts.   They are hardy, intelligent, easy calvers and make excellent mothers.

Calving problems are very rare and the calves are up on their feet very quickly.   They are able to fend for themselves and human intervention is seldom needed for mothers and calves to do very well.
Dexters are traditionally a dual purpose breed but recently they have received much TV publicity relating to the superb quality of Dexter beef.   The beef is well marbled and many have remarked this is what beef used to taste like.
Dexters come in two types:  shorts and non-shorts.    At Cwmdrysien we keep non-shorts.   They can be one of three colours:  black (most common), red or dun.  They can be horned or naturally polled (genetically without horns).
The adaptability of the breed to differing climatic conditions has meant that it has been exported to many parts of the world including Europe, America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
